Jan-Willem van de Ven is Head of International Climate Policy and Engagement at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Climate Strategy and Delivery Department. At the EBRD, Jan-Willem’s role includes carbon market development, climate finance strategy, international climate policy engagement, and developing and implementing impactful climate action programmes across the EBRD regions.
Jan-Willem leads, sponsors, and coaches a team of experts and specialists who work with countries, clients, and partners to deliver climate projects that address mitigation, adaptation, and green transition challenges and opportunities. In addition, he engages in policy dialogue and capacity building with the EBRD countries of operation, supporting them to aligning with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Jan-Willem is also a Senior Advisor on the MDB Climate Group, a Member of the Katowice Committee on the Implementation of Response Measures (KCI), a Sherpa for the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action, and a Member of the Advisory Committee Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT).
Prior to joining the EBRD, Jan-Willem was a Steering Committee Member of the NDC Partnership and worked as Innovation Manager with Dutch utility company Essent. He has a MSc degree in Technology and Society International Technological Development Science from the Eindhoven University of Technology and a BEng in Business Engineering from the Eindhoven Higher Technical School.
Jan-Willem has over 25 years of experience in the fields of climate policy, sustainable energy, new business development, and the development of sustainable energy projects from Northern Africa, Central America to Eastern Europe. He plays an active role in the international policy dialogue for carbon markets, climate finance and the promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
